Class A Motorhomes are Big!
The types of recreational vehicles are categorized as Class A, B, and C depending on the size and structure of the vehicle. Using the simplest description as possible, Class A motorhomes are the most spaceous, the most luxurious, and definitely the priciest. Class B’s are basically a tricked out van with a higher roof. And your Class C is a scaled down version of the Class A with a few other exceptions, namely the cab-over style and shorter length.
Class A motorhomes are usually constructed on one of three types of chassis:
- a commercial bus chassis
- a commercial truck chassis
- a specially designed recreational vehicle chassis
Running anywhere from 25-45 feet in length, the Class A motorhome is the biggest one of the three classes. Typically, all motorhomes come with beds, dining and food prep areas, and storage areas. Class A’s have gotten even more luxurious in recent years in that some come equipped with satellite TV, full refrigerators, and even what is called a master bedroom. They even have been known to come with full bath facilities as well. Awnings, internet access, and multiple slide-outs are becoming quite common, also.
A Class A motorhome starting price is around $50,000 and as far as the top end goes, the sky can be the limit. The higher end motorhomes will run between $100,000 and $600,000, but in 2006, one of the luxury coach designers produced one with a built-in treadmill, marble flooring, and plush carpeting and furniture that sold for a tidy $2.5 million. But realistically, you can find very luxurious Class A motorhomes for around $100,000.
On a side note, Bus Conversions are oftentimes considered as a Class A motorhome. They are what their name implies, a commercial bus that has been converted into a motorhome. They are typically the largest of the motorhomes and usually come with highly customized and very luxurious interiors.
The actual living room in a Class A is spacious and can be made even roomier with the addition of the slide-out option. Most of these RV’s can sleep 6-8 people comfortably and come with a full kitchen and bath area. One of the nicer features about most Class A’s is that they now come with a variety of floorplans to satisfy different consumer tastes and preferences.
Class A motorhomes are also known as motor coaches. Some of the amenities were already mentioned above, but in addition to these, washers and dryers are available, as well as full size ranges and microwaves in the kitchen area. They can be designed with hardwood cabinets and flooring, have carpeting and tile, and to top it off, they can even have designer upholstered furniture installed if you so desire.
If you need an RV with enough towing power to haul a car or a boat, then the Class A motorhome is definitely the way to go. Taking all of the above into consideration, it’s very easy to see why the Class A motorhome is appropriately called a home on wheels.
