One of the Oldest RV Manufacturers Thor Industries, Inc. was founded in 1980, when Airstream (one of
the most recognized names in the RV industry) was acquired by Wade
F.B. Thompson and Perter B. Orthwein. The Thor name came about by
combining the first two letters of Wade F. B. Thompson and Peter
B. Orthwein's names. In 1982, Thor RV purchased General Coach, a

manufacturing motorhomes and travel trailers. Citation and Chateau
travel trailers and fifth wheels were part of the contract. In 1984,
Thor became a publicly traded company and eventually traded on the
New York Stock Exchange in 1986. In addition, that same year Forbes
Magazine ranked Thor sixth out of "200 Best Small Companies
in America". Thor bought Dutchman travel trailers and fifth
wheels in 1991. In 1992, Thor acquired Fourwinds, a manufacturer
of Class "A" motor homes and Class "C" motorhomes.
In 1995, the Thor family grew by the acquisitions of Komfort and
Skamper. Thor introduced Tahoe and Wanderer travel trailers and fifth
wheels in 1996, which became an instant hit in the fast growing RV
market. Thor industries became one of the largest RV manufacturers
in North America after they purchased Keystone RV in 2001 and Damon
