At Pedata You Can Find a Used RV For Sale, and a Wealth of Information

Pedata can find you a used RV for sale because that is exactly what they do. However, they also constantly monitor the news and latest safety information for recreational vehicle users, as well as all other campers. Pedata recently put out an advisory, warning campers to avoid coming in contact with the wildlife they may encounter while enjoying the outdoors.

Recently, while conducting routine trapping and testing, the Department of Environmental Health (DEH) for San Diego County discovered three ground squirrels that tested positive for the plague. One of the infected squirrels came from the Laguna El Prado Campground off Sunrise Highway on Mount Laguna. The other two were trapped at the Cedar Grove Campground near Palomar Mountain.

According to the DEH, squirrels infected with the plague are not extremely uncommon during the summertime. They further reported that in the recent case, the risk to humans is low. This is because the squirrels’ exposure to the bacteria was not very recent, so they didn’t carry several of the types of fleas that can actually transmit the disease to people.

During the Middle Ages, the plague was responsible for millions of deaths in Europe. It was referred to as “Black Death.” According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, the plague can cause serious illness or death to humans if prompt medical assistance is not sought. However, if treated in a timely fashion, it can be cured with antibiotic treatments.

Jack Miller of the DEH offers a few common sense rules to follow to help avoid getting infected with the plague:

  • When setting up camp, make sure your tents are away from squirrel burrows
  • Don’t feed the squirrels
  • Tell your children not to play with squirrels, even if they seem friendly
  • Avoid contact with any sick or dead animals
  • Keep your pets on a leash while in the woods or outdoors
  • Make sure your pets are treated with a form of flea control

The DEH posts signs in the areas where plague-infested squirrels are discovered. They advise that anyone who becomes ill within a week of visiting one of the affected areas should seek medical attention right away. The symptoms to watch out for are a sudden onset of fever, chills, and tender or swollen lymph nodes.

  1. Mike Anderson says:

Thank you for the information. We do camp in San Diego and we will be super careful about squirrels the next we go. I don’t think we usually see any, but at least now we know what to watch out for.

  2. Bonnie Lee says:

I always tell my grand kids to stay away from the animals when we go camping. Now I have a really good reason to make sure they do. We don’t camp in San Diego, but who says this couldn’t be happening somewhere else too?

  3. Jan Stevens says:

Yikes- Glad I don’t live in California!

  4. Ron Georgian says:

We always make sure our dogs have flea collars on when we take them camping. There are so many diseases that fleas carry, we don’t want to take any chances.
