Buying a Used RV
Buy a used RV or buy a new RV? Looking at the fact that the basic price of vehicles continues to rise every year, it’s no wonder why the pre-owned segment of the industry shows signs of flourishing growth. With the price of new RV’s being what they are, the analogy can be made that buying used RVs is a viable option. Aside from the fact that purchasing a used RV is less expensive than going all out on a new one, there is one other benefit that can be taken into consideration as well.
Probably the biggest benefit other than the price is that it is far less of an investment than if you were to purchase a brand new RV off the dealer’s lot. In other words, this benefit definitely applies to that “first-time” buyer. If you have never owned an RV before, this is a far less costly way to break into the RV-ing lifestyle and experiment with whether or not it is for you.
If you have definitely decided on purchasing a used RV versus a new one, then you should probably put in some due diligence and do a little bit of research. The most important part of the purchasing process involves the decision making aspect --- ask yourself what kind of used RV you want to purchase and what type will suit your needs. Try to figure out what will fit best with the outdoor and vacationing lifestyle that you’re trying to achieve. Remember that RV’s come in all shapes and sizes, and that not all of them require getting behind the wheel and driving.
Now is the time when you want to consider all the options available when buying a used RV. There is Class A and C motorhomes that come equipped with either diesel or gas engines, so there is one option to think about. If you decide that driving something of that size isn’t for you then there are camper trailers, travel trailers, and other towable RV’s. The nice aspect of the research end of the proposition is that you can use the internet to save you an awful lot of time.
Probably the next recommendation will be the one that can save you the most amounts of grief and money in the long run. Find a mechanic that specializes in RV’s and get them to inspect it. You should do this anyway any time that you are purchasing a used vehicle but especially if you are planning on purchasing a used RV.
Consider all the financing options that are available to you. There are options for every consumer regardless of good or not so good credit scores. There are several types of lending institutions that you can choose from such as a credit union, the dealership itself, a neighborhood bank (or your bank), and savings and loans. The main thing you want to research is the cost of that loan. Finance charges and interest rates always vary regardless of where the prime lending rate is sitting.
Finally, you definitely want to purchase an extended warranty, primarily because the ones that come with used RV’s (or any used vehicle for that matter) are never sufficient. There are two huge reasons for doing this. First, it’s just common sense where protecting yourself against costly repairs is concerned. Secondly, it will probably help you from a financial standpoint down the road.
