Diesel RVs are self contained. They also offer the additional benefit of having living quarters accessible at all times from the driving quarters. Diesel motorhomes are easier to operate than towable variations in the recreational vehicle industry, but they also tend to carry higher price tags than their comparable towable models. At least they carry higher price tags when purchasing new! Many buyers avoid this slight negative by looking at used diesel motorhome options in their area.

The first of the three main categories of diesel motorhomes is the Class A recreational vehicle. The Class A is easily recognized. It's got the general shape of a bus (long), but it's sleek and elegant in design. The Class A category is filled with the largest diesel pusher RVs in the industry. They're the most expensive options, but offer a wide variety of features and price tags within the classification. In general, the RVs within Class A offer separated bathrooms, bedrooms and kitchens.

The Class B is the second type of RV. They're often the smallest of the self contained models. The Class B RV can offer similar amenities: kitchen, cook top, sleeping area, etcetera. But they offer the amenities in a much more compact design. Their smaller size makes them much easier to maneuver as well as making it more feasible to travel without a car in tow.

The Class C RV can be identified by the sleeping quarters that overhang the driving area. Class C motorhomes are built on a truck chassis. When it comes to size they typically fall between Class B RVs and Class A RVs. They're big enough to offer the option of towing a vehicle for local travel once travelers reach their destination.

Used diesel motorhome shoppers should consider several important issues. First, the age of the vehicle should be determined and considered. How old is the RV? Older models can offer a better up front value, but maintenance and repair costs will often be higher. They could also receive lower gas mileage. But higher quality RVs typically have a longer life on the road so the used purchase usually saves buyers money over the life of the vehicle.

Secondly, consider the previous owners' treatment of the vehicle. Note the physical condition. Is it beat up? Is it worn out? Has it been abused? The cosmetic state of the vehicle can be good indicators of how well the vehicle was maintained mechanically. But there are always exceptions to this rule so don't rule out options that look less than well maintained cosmetically, just be more careful about having the mechanical status of the vehicle verified by an outside mechanic, etc.

A third consideration that some overlook prior to purchasing is storage. Where will your RV be staying when you're not staying in it? Many RV owners find themselves in a bind because they were unaware of neighborhood or city policies regarding RV parking and storage so be aware of the regulations that may apply to you prior to purchase. And have a designated storage area where you can keep your RV. (The best storage for RVs is, of course, in a covered area in order to maintain the exterior surfaces!)
