Like countless other industries, the recreational vehicle industry has recently taken a downturn in the ever-declining American economy.  As financial markets slump and basic living costs rise, more and more Americans find an extra strain put on their flexible spending.  This does nothing to help the sales of recreational or luxury items, such as high-end RVs and motor homes.  Particularly now that gas continues to reach record-breaking prices almost daily across the country, sales of these gas dependent recreational vehicles has slumped.

For some RV buyers, however, this may be as good a time as ever to buy an RV online – possibly even better than ever.  There are several types of recreational vehicles that do not require any more gas consumption than owners already use driving their cars.  Smaller units, like pop-up trailers and truck trailers that clamp onto pick-up truck beds, can be pulled by the vehicles they already own.  Some of the smallest varieties can even be pulled by mid-sized or compact cars which are some of the most fuel efficient vehicles on the road, and these compact models add comparatively little weight when towing them.  Any towable unit can be unhitched and left at the campsite upon arrival, leaving the tow vehicle free to use for efficient around-town transportation during their stay.  As one would expect, sales of these varieties of recreational vehicles has not seen the downturn that the larger models have experienced. 

Additionally, for those buying on the used market, this may be a better time than ever to be buying.  As homeowners across the nation are pinched more and more to make ends meet, many turn to selling their non-essential commodities as a way to make some extra income.  RVs are one such commodity that many individuals are hoping to sell.  The demand for these used RVs is relatively low right now, just like the demand for luxury items across the economic board are down.  This puts buyers at a distinct advantage.  In the absence of high demand, the market value for these RVs is likely to decrease to prices well below the market values they would have sold for just a few years ago.  Dealers and wholesalers may offer special deals and offers to make new RVs more attractive and boost sales.  A savvy and patient shopper can find a great deal in these circumstances.

Many Americans are accustomed to a lifestyle that involves travel and vacationing.  While the economic slump may cause these individuals to rethink their travel plans, it does not necessarily require them to cancel vacations altogether.  A motor home can be a great budget-friendly trip in place of more extravagant, long distance travel.  Families can eliminate hotel and restaurant costs, and enjoy the free or nearly-free sights of the natural world by visiting a lake, state park, or near-by attraction.  Many travelers find that it is not the distance traveled that constitutes a restful and enjoyable vacation, but rather the way that time is spent.  Many vacationers will likely look closer to home for their summer destinations, and traveling and staying by RV is one of the more comfortable ways to enjoy a road trip or camping vacation.
