Shopping for a New RV
If you’re considering purchasing a new RV, you’ll want to do some research and educate yourself all you can about the subject before making that purchase. This is especially true for the “first-time” buyer. The first thing you want to always remember when you start thinking about purchasing an RV is that it does you no good to buy a new RV if you don’t intend on using it regularly. Otherwise, you might just as well be purchasing a huge decoration for your driveway. This is a big decision, so make it a wise one.
The most important question you need to ask yourself is “Can I afford to buy a new RV?” Despite the fact that a myriad of finance options exist for people with good credit and not so good credit, doing some research on the price ranges of the different brands is still sound advice. You need to make sure that this is an affordable investment, otherwise, you will regret it for many years to come. The bottom line is that purchasing a recreational vehicle can be a serious financial commitment, and just like buying a house or paying for your child’s college tuition, you need to be wise and exercise caution in the decision making process.
Determine the size of RV that you need. Are you going to be traveling solo, or is the wife and children part of the traveling equation. The number of people that will be riding in the RV is a key factor when it comes to deciding how big of one to purchase. What matters the most is the comfort factor and how easy it is to move about the “cabin” when there are a number of bodies to contend with. Is there enough room for eating, sleeping, and traveling?
Now that you have looked at the primary criteria, decide on the features and options that will fit the needs of you and your family. Once again you need to look at the issues of comfort, dining, moving around inside the vehicle, and sleeping. Can you get by with a minimum of features and options or do you want (and moreover, can you afford) all the bells and whistles that are available?
When vacationing in your new RV, what will be its primary use? Obviously it is a form of camping, but what type of camping and RV’ing will you be doing? When you own an RV, there are three different categories of camping use:
- remote --- no facilities are available except for the ones in your RV
- primitive --- there is a minimum of facilities available, but the RV contains the ones that are really necessary
- campgrounds designated as RV parks --- there are full facilities available so that you can use those or the ones in your RV
Finally, here is the piece of advice that is usually the one that is the most overlooked. Where are you going to store that new RV when you aren’t using it? Certain cities in every state have regulations that are extremely strict about this, so you need to talk with someone in your city government office that can answer this question for you. Key advice on this point --- never assume anything.
