When looking for a motorhome for sale, finding out the true market value is important to avoid over paying.  This requires an understanding of the current market trends, namely how strong the market is and how in demand the type of motorhome you are buying is. 

The most basic way to ascertain the fair market value of a new motorhome for sale is by starting with the price paid by the RV dealer.  Unfortunately, this information is not something most of the buying public has access to.  A second best means of pricing, then, is by comparative price shopping.  Don’t compare just sticker prices.  Talk to other recent RV buyers and see what they paid out the door for their new motorhome.  If you don’t know anyone in your neighborhood who has recently purchased a motorhome, as you well may not, do your research through an online forum for RV owners.  There are also consumer publications that can be purchased that contain information on average price listed for a new motorhome, average actual price paid, and the rate at which the unit depreciated.

To avoid making the wrong decision, take your time to really look around.  Shoppers should price compare as much as possible.  Even consider looking at the resale prices older years of the recreational vehicle model you are looking at sell for and, considering their rates of depreciation, establish an estimate of their original value.  Depreciation rates are usually fairly constant over the short term: therefore, only use newer models when applying this method.

When looking for a used motorhome for sale, there are more reliable resources available.  Consult a guide such as Kelly Bluebook or NADA Guides.  While these are good starting points, the informed purchaser will need to look beyond just these types of sources for pricing information.  A plethora of online sellers list their prices; consult and compare as many of these as possible to determine if the motorhome you have found for sale is priced similarly. 

Regardless of where you are buying the motorhome, you should feel comfortable discussing your findings with the seller.  Both individual sellers and dealers alike should be open to discussing fair pricing.  Whether or not they will be receptive to any requests to lower the price is another question.  Some may hope to exhaust you with the haggling process in the hopes that you will concede.  However, if they are already showing flexibility in the price, and you have good information to back up your request, stand firm or walk away from a seller who won’t meet your terms.  Most buyers would agree that it is better to wait for another unit to come along than to overpay.  If you find that many sellers are refusing your offer, perhaps your calculations are overly optimistic.  Remember to take market ups and downs into account.  If it is peak selling season, or the market is experiencing a boom of sorts, do not expect sellers to be eager to cut you a special deal when they can sell to someone else for full price.
