Buying a Used RV – Getting the Best Used RV Deal

When buying a used RV, there are several things a potential RV buyer should be prepared to do.  First of all, some shopping around and time investment will be required. Be prepared to look at many recreational vehicles before finding a great deal on one that you really love.  If you are in a hurry to buy or rush your decision, you will greatly increase your chances of making a bad deal that you will not be happy with in the long-term.

If this is your first time buying a used RV, chances are you don’t know all there is to know about them.  Talk to people who own RVs.  If you have friends or family who own them, use them as a resource.  Find out what they like and don’t like about their motor homes, how often they use them, where they can and can’t take them, what costs they incur in maintaining them, and if they would do anything differently if buying again.  If possible, ask this person to come with you while looking at possible purchases.  If you don’t know anyone with an RV, get online and search for RV enthusiast websites or travel journals where you can read about the experiences of RV owners. 

Be very critical in your inspections of the RVs you look at.  It is almost certain that you will find flaws when buying a used RV, no matter how gently used it is.  Take note of everything you find on paper.  This will make it much easier to compare the vehicles you have looked at, and to discuss repairs and price with the seller.  Everything you find should be taken into account when discussing price.  The more that you find wrong with the vehicle, the more the seller should be willing to negotiate on price. 

It is also wise to request a mechanical inspection of the RV before you buy.  Bringing it to a mechanic for a full inspection is a reasonable expectation that the seller should be open to.  When buying from a dealer, the RVs will often be inspected on-site or come with performance guarantees.

Through all of this, be sure to keep a level head.  It is easy to get swept away in the thought of driving off into the sunset with your exciting new purchase, but don’t become too attached to any one RV that you look at.  Your travel experiences will be made the best they can possibly be by exercising caution and making a well thought out decision.  If a seller doesn’t accept your offer, or you find that the faults you uncovered do not warrant their asking price, don’t be afraid to walk away.  You will find the RV that is right for you, but some patience may be necessary.
