RV Maintenance Tips from Pedata RV Center

The battery is located in many different places depending on the coach. The battery is usually located in one of the compartments. They can pretty much be anywhere, such as the back or front of the unit, possibly under the entry steps. Just look around in the compartments to locate the battery.

There are also many different types of batteries, some are maintenance free.  On those certain batteries you just have to make sure is that there is no corrosion on the terminals and that everything is tight and secure.

What you need is

• a wire brush
• some battery terminal protector
• rubber gloves
• eye protection

When you are working with batteries you do want to make sure your skin and eyes are protected. You can start by scrubbing down the battery where the bolts are to remove all the excess dust and rust, then spray the bolts with the protecting spray. This will protect it from any future corroding from occurring.

On 6 volt batteries, they do take water. So be sure to check the water level. To check for water you can open up the cap on the top and peak in side to see where the water level is. You want to make sure the water level is above the Lead plates. The plates are about two inches down from the top. The water should be topped off probably every two months, all depending on the climate.

In Arizona we need to do it about once a month because it is a much hotter environment. What you have filled the battery up with is distilled water which you can pick up at any grocery or corner store. After you have filled up the 6 volt batteries with water, re-seal it with the lid.

Once again check the terminals and make sure they are all cleaned up. Check the connections and make sure they are sealed tight. Then spray some of the protecting spray on the top of the battery and on the bolts. That should complete the maintenance repair of your battery.
