While German automaker Volkswagen is most closely associated with smaller sedans like the classic Beetle or the more modern Jetta, the company was also responsible for one of the most popular motorhome models of the 60s and 70s, the VW Microbus. While the company hasn't made a new model of the diminutive RV in years, it seems that VW may once again be pursuing the motorhome element with a new campervan that could debut in the next few years. Design chiefs from within VW have given developers the go ahead to create a new generation of the microbus for the modern RVer. The company had attempted to relaunch the line in 2001, going so far as to debut a concept vehicle at that year's Berlin Auto Show, but cancelled the project in 2005 due to cost concerns. For this time around, the company is looking at several new strategies to make the vehicle more accessible to the new RVers without doing away with the features that experienced road warriors have come to expect from the brand. "It could be a traditional MPV, with a conventional interior, or we could be much bolder, designing a more flexible, versatile machine - perhaps one that is closer in spirit to the original model. It is not yet decided," claims VW head designer Klaus Bischoff.
