Though RVs have become more fuel-efficient over the years, even the greenest models still guzzle gas by the tank. One Swiss design firm is hoping to change all that, however, as the company has introduced a sleek new fully-electric recreational vehicle that runs entirely on solar power. The vehicle, which most closely resembles a futuristic take on the classic Airstream travel trailer, converts into a carbon-neutral camper when not in drive. Dubbed the ECCO, the vehicle actually transforms into its camper, or "living," mode gaining a set of stairs, a bathroom, a large window and a sleeping loft big enough for two. When in living mode, the vehicle also extends a sail of sorts that is covered in solar panels and recharges the vehicle's electrical systems. The company behind this creation is NAU, a diverse team of visionary designers, architects and Hollywood special-effects artists who set out to create a unique and ornate vehicle that was both livable and sustainable. Though the ECCO has proven a hit with the press, it is unlikely to ever see mass production due to the costs of construction and upkeep of one of these vehicles. Though Jo Borras of the Gas 2.0 blog believes that the ECCO may be the first step towards more eco-friendly RVs in the future.
