While many industries are driven by trends, few businesses face market shifts as rapid as the automotive industry. Lately, drivers have been embracing smaller, more fuel efficient vehicles as a part of an industry-wide push to go green - and even the RV sector has taken notice. For this year's Camper, Travel and RV Show at DeVos Place, manufacturers are rolling out a new stream of lighter RVs meant to scratch the itch of eco-conscious vacationers and green-minded RVers alike. More than 250 models will be on display, ranging from pop-up campers and travel trailers to more spacious fifth wheelers and class B motorhomes. Manufacturers hope the new direction will help the industry continue its upward swing from the weak performance of the past year. "Last year was a tough year for RV dealers, but we will have two more rows of RVs than we had last year," Mike Wilbraham, the event's manager, told MLive.com. "People in the industry tell me that the RV business is the first in and first out of a recession." Wilbraham comments that the number of manufacturers showcasing smaller RVs has doubled since last year, and these smaller vehicles are expected to drive the market in the near future.
