While the American automotive industry is still struggling in the wake of the recent economic recession, the RV sector seems to be booming as the New York Times reports that the sale and production of recreational vehicles is growing faster than earlier predictions may have shown. While the continually positive performance of class A motor homes is helping revive the RV industry, some analysts believe that it may also be an omen for the American economy as a whole. Nowhere is this growth more apparent than Elkhart County, Indiana, where local professionals have been returning to the assembly lines to help meet the country's rising demand for campers, travel trailers and motor homes. The uptick has not only helped the county reduce its unemployment rate from 20 percent to 13.7 percent, but also signifies a growth in the need for parts suppliers and affiliated businesses both in the area and at a national level. "The recreation-vehicle industry is a leading economic indicator for the nation," Sid Johnson, the director of marketing for Elkhart County-based RV manufacturer Jayco, told the news provider. "We lead the country into recessions, and we lead the country out of recessions."
