Though thousands of people take to America's roadways aboard class B motorhomes, travel trailers and toy haulers each year, some communities are still not too accepting of the RV lifestyle. Yet slowly but surely, that attitude seems to be changing , and nowhere is that more evident than in Lake City, Florida, where the city has removed all signs banning RVers from parking their vehicles on city and private property. The ordeal began at the local Walmart super store, where a crop of "No RV Camping or Sleeping" signs were thrust upon the business by the Columbia County Tourist Development Council this past January. Under the law, no RV can be used for living, sleeping or housekeeping in any lot not zoned specifically for that purpose. City Manager Wendell Johnson claims that his office was flooded with scores of letters demanding the removal of these signs and the repeal of the law behind them. Though the law remains, officials have removed the signs, and drivers will be allowed to park in the lot at the owner's discretion. "We thought the best thing to do would be to take (the signs) down," Johnson told the Lake City Reporter. "It's just the right thing to do."
