Most people crossing the country in a 45-foot class C motorhome are touring the land in search of fun and adventure, yet one recreational vehicle making its way to the Motor City this week has a more charitable idea in mind. The RV is one of three similar vehicles sponsored by the California-based VSP Vision Care that are going from town to town to provide free eye exams and glasses to needy children, and Detroit, Michigan, was their latest stop. Inside the custom vehicle, optometrists share two fully-functioning exam rooms and a small store that offers children a wealth of choices when it comes time to pick out their new frames. Since the program's launch in 2007, these vehicles have distributed more than $145 million worth of free glasses, exams and services to over 60,000 students across the country. Kim Rankin, an operations manager for the mobile clinic program, claims that the RV brings hope to many of these kids, as most are receiving some form of government assistance and would not be able to afford new glasses. "[Public health providers] might say, 'You need glasses,' but they don't provide them," she told the Free Press. "Students, their self-esteem, their grades, their academic progress is associated with being able to see clearly. And the earlier you catch it, the better chance the student has of doing well in every aspect of their lives."
