Used Travel Trailer Sustainable Camping Efforts

Monday, August 30th, 2010

You and your used travel trailer can go green with sustainable camping, so begin your learning experience. Sustainable is defined officially by the UN Commission on Environment as “…development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs.” Read more on how you can be green in your used travel trailer.

Your used travel trailer is a tool that you can use to help teach future children and grandchildren about sustainability and living green. Teach by example, and camp at sustainable campgrounds in your used travel trailer or recreational vehicle.

When you take your used travel trailer on a camping trip, make sure that you leave your camping spot in better condition than how you found it. You and your used travel trailer should support the natural environment.

1.         Most sustainable campgrounds will have lots of greenery, allowing for privacy when camping in your used travel trailer. The greenery helps you feel secluded.

2.         See if there are boardwalks made with wood. They should be above ground to help avoiding the ground and damaging it.

3.         See if you can use the water from your used travel trailer shower or waste to help nourish the surrounding greenery.

4.         Ask if the campground buildings are prefabricated. Also, ask if the is a lot of heavy equipment around. You do not want this.

Sustainable RV sites will also have resources to energy conservation.

Ask the campground to see if the lights are energy efficient. Make sure your own RV has energy saver lights and appliances.

1.         Ask about labor saving devices at the motorhome campsite that they used to conserve energy onsite.

2.         Check to see if the RV site has solar paneling. Do you use solar panels on your own new or used recreational vehicle?

3.         Ask the site if they do anything specific for water conservation efforts. They may use water saving showerheads.

4.         What are the water sources for the campground? Is the water available pure?

5.         Another important question to ask when looking for sustainable RV camp grounds is ? do they have recycling efforts, recycling bins, or a compost pile for you to use when camping at the grounds.

Inquire about cultural and local preservation efforts

Many RV campgrounds are sustainable, and they are visibly offering a green place for you to park your used RV. It will be evident that the RV site respects its land.

1.         Does the campground main store support local artists and the area economy?

2.         Also, make sure you ask if there is a local farmers market that you can stock up your used motorhomes with. You will find fresh fruits and veggies that you can cook with in your motor home on your RV trip.

It is up to you and your RVing family to take part in the green and sustainable camping revolution. You will be teaching the young good camping habits that will make the world a better place for their kids.

Fifth Wheel Trailers And Traveling Tips For Those With Disabilities

Sunday, August 29th, 2010

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) allowed folks with special needs to travel by RV and fifth wheel trailers easier than ever before. Most fifth wheel trailers can be purchased with ADA specifications, or if you already own an RV, they can be modified for your specific needs. RVing is for those with or without physical disabilities, so get on the road today.

Do not leave town before solidifying a place to park fifth wheel trailers

There are many RV camp sites that have ADA accessibility for fifth wheel trailers. It is up to you, though to make sure you and your needs can be met. There are special spots for fifth wheel trailers that are handicap accessible on most RV grounds. Once you know the route you want to take and the new RV campground that you want to stay at, call and ask questions that complement your own needs.

1.         Do the 5th wheel spots have wheelchair slabs for accessibility?

2.         Do the spots for RVs have wheelchair ramps?

3.         Make sure that the hookups available are easy to access for fifth wheel trailers.

4.         Will I be able to access the RV facilities (office, bathroom, store) easily if I am disabled?

5.         Do the onsite showers have a wheelchair accessible entrance?

6.         Are the recreational facilities ADA friendly?

7.         Will there be dedicated things to do for those with physical disabilities?

Be emergency prepared in your motorhome

1.         You will want to keep the details of your medical needs and information organized and on hand in your recreational vehicle.

2.         Make sure medical details are written clearly, just in case someone has to pass on the information to a health care agent.

3.         You will want to include your personal, at-home doctor phone number and information. Keep a list on hand of all prescription drugs.

4.         The prescription drug list should be as detailed as possible, name, description, time you take, etc.

Also keep a list of items that will be helpful to you if your identity is stolen. Items you should make copies of are Medicare card, identification card, credit card numbers. It is also important that this private information is kept locked up and safe.

Have you thought about a travel buddy with you in your Class A motorhome or 5th wheeler?

Sometimes it is pleasant to travel independently, but be extra careful if you have special needs. In some cases, it is better to travel with a buddy. This could be beneficial, so think about taking a friend or family member. You can also hire a specialized travel companion through dependable services.

Two organizations, Handicapped Travel Club, Inc. and the Travelin Talk Network, are both great ways to connect with other physically disabled travelers. You will make RVing friends along your route.

Pedata RV Center Urges RVers to Celebrate Fall by Making a Fall Festival Road Trip

Tuesday, August 24th, 2010

Phoenix, AZ – Pedata RV Center urges RVers to celebrate fall by making a Fall Festival road trip. Many see the recreational vehicle as a means of summer travel, but in today’s day and age the RV is no longer delegated to the sidelines once summer comes to a close. Long time RVers and “first timers” will be able to sit back, relax and enjoy a road trip featuring fall festivals.

Pedata RV Center’s Gerard Pedata said, “For fall travel the East coast is a popular location. It’s commonly agreed that the eastern regions are able to provide the most perfect representation of the fall season. Travelers get the changing colors on the trees, the falling leaves, the breezes and, of course, the fall festivals.”

Popular fall festivals in the New England area:

1.    20th Annual Harpoon Octoberfest, October 2-3, 2009, Harpoon Brewery, Boston, Massachusetts. This festival is known for: one of New England’s largest Octoberfest celebrations annually featuring fresh Harpoon beer samples, German food, live German Oompa Band performances, keg bowling, the Chicken Dance contest and more.

2.    Hildene Fall Art and Craft Festival, October 2-4, 2009, Hildene, Manchester, Vermont. This festival is known for: its annual fall craft show typically featuring works by 200 different artisans, live entertainment, food and more.

3.    Warner Fall Foliage Festival, October 9-11, 2009, Downtown, Warner, New Hampshire. This festival is known for its downtown festival featuring crafts, carnival rides, a farmer’s market, food and entertainment.

4.    Sunday River Fall Festival Weekend, October 10-11, 2009, Sunday River Ski Resort, Newry, Maine. This fall festival is known for the Taste of Maine and the 26th Annual Blue Mountain Arts and Crafts Festival, the 10th Annual North American Wife Carrying Championships (the winner of this event wins his partner’s weight in Bug Light)! Additional events include chainsaw woodcarving demonstrations, horse-drawn wagon rides, a pre-season sports sale, kids’ activities, concerts, etc.

5.    Mystic Seaport Chowderfest, October 10-12, 2009, Mystic Seaport, Mystic, Connecticut. This fall festival is known for its Chowderfest, an annual tribute to New England’s signature soup. It also offers a variety of additional New England fare, live music, activities for children and all of the sights and experiences of the maritime museum.

6.    Wellfleet OysterFest, October 17-18, 2009, Main Street, Wellfleet, Massachusetts. This fall festival is known for its OysterFest in Wellfleet. Visitors won’t want to miss the  crafts, the Oyster Shuck-Off, the additional family activities or the music.

7.    Keene Pumpkin Festival, October 17, 2009, Main Street, Keene, New Hampshire. This fall festival is known for its amazing number of Jack O Lanterns. It vies with Boston for the Guinness Book of World Records recognition as the area with the most lit pumpkins.

This is just a smattering of the available options in the area. RVers who decide they prefer a certain type of fall festival are encouraged to do some additional research. Travelers can easily make a trip of hitting all the Fall festivals featuring Octoberfests or all the fall festivals featuring local artisans or all the fall festivals featuring local seafood…the options are many.

Travel In Your Motorhome Class C With Volun-Tourism

Monday, August 23rd, 2010

There are people that have just returned from their vacation that state that they need another vacation just to recoup. Volun-Toursim is a new type of vacation, and you can participate in it with your motorhome Class C. It is defined as taking a vacation to help others in your motorhome Class C. Your RVing trip can help someone who is in need.

What do I do first when I want to participate with my motorhome Class C RV?

Several Volun-Tourism organizations can be found by searching the internet. Begin first by discussing the options with your traveling companions, whether it will be friends or family members who will be traveling in your motorhome Class C unit with you. Make a list of potential motorhome Class C Volun-Tourism trips. Contact different organizations directly to see which ones complement you and your companions values. You want everyone in your motorhome Class C to be enthusiastic about the cause. Sample causes could be endangered species; inner city youth; arts; or even feeding the homeless.

Select the cause, and then what?

The next step before traveling in your motorhome Class C is to make direct contact with the organization directly. You will want to find out specific details on the volunteer opportunities. See what you and your family will be doing. Ask about past experiences with motorhome Class C travelers and volunteer efforts. Discuss the nonprofits mission statement and other activities in their community to make sure it is something that you will want to commit time and energy to. You may have an application process that you need to fill out prior to making the trip in your motorhome Class C RV unit.

What to expect from the organization during the volunteer period?

Ask details on what you will need to do with your RV before you travel to volunteer. See what costs you will be responsible to pay for. You may have to pay for gas to and from the location, as well as food and camp grounds along the route. Ask where you will be expected to park when you are spending time working, and see if there is transportation available to haul you and your family/friends to and from the volunteer site. Ask the organization about all types of additional information to supplement your RV trip.

Financial donations are a way to help, even if you cannot travel

You may not have the time to help or volunteer currently, or your health may not be ideal for traveling. If so, financial gifts are always appreciated by nonprofits. Check online to see what giving levels are available, but most all donations will be welcome.

Jump on the volunteer tourism trend and help others while traveling and seeing the world in your recreational vehicle. It is up to you to make such a difference.

Fifth Wheel Trailer And RVing With Physical Challenges

Sunday, August 22nd, 2010

If you or your traveling family members are physically challenged, then you will be satisfied in knowing that there is a fifth wheel trailer to suit your special RVing requirements. There is a fifth wheel trailer that you can modify, no matter if it is new or as used fifth wheel trailer that has been modified previously. Your life on the road will not be discontinued.

Fifth wheel trailer adaptations just for wheelchairs

One of the most popular ways to modify a fifth wheel trailer is with a special restrain system. There are wheelchair safety belts with safety straps to hold the wheelchair in the fifth wheel trailer steady. Safety belts will stabilize the chair and help to support the rider. This helps to ensure safety when traveling in the fifth wheel trailer.

You can also modify the travel trailer 5th wheel by adding an elevator lift to help with the chair be raised and lowered to the ground. If you choose to add a used elevator lift for the chair on your own with a mechanic, make sure the RV mechanic is knowledgeable and approves the apparatus.

There are other aids and technology for RVers with physical disabilities

There are many types of driving aids for people who have disabilities. For example, you can place a left foot accelerator on the 5th wheeler. This tool helps the driver. There are devices, such as these, that help control the accelerator and/or the brakes. There are electronic steering apparatuses also available. If you are or will be traveling with a quadriplegic, you can find touch pad systems and controls, as well as power head rests to make traveling easier, safer, and more pleasant.

Things you can do to your RV to modify it for the physically challenged

1.         You may be able to widen the travel trailer doors so moving within the cabin is safe. There are also roll-in showers that are available on the market for you to purchase and install.

2.         Lower the sinks in the motor home and lower the countertops. By doing this, you can allow easier access to the wheelchairs in the recreational vehicle.

3.         When you lower sinks to make sure someone in a wheelchair can reach the faucets and counters.

4.         Another good idea is to install a panic button or buttons throughout the recreational vehicle or 5th wheeler in case someone is stuck in a troublesome situation all alone.

Can I lower costs when converting my RV?

Keeping your costs low is important when moderating your motorhome or fifth wheeler. Use a company that is reputable. Research around. Look for experts in the field. Ask your dealership for recommendations. See if there is a used recreational vehicle available that suits your RVing needs.

Should I go to the trouble of modifying my recreational vehicle?

When you are thinking about your RV and whether or not to modify it for special needs, you need to understand that you can continue your life on the road, no matter what. RVs are adaptable. If this would be your first time RV buy, then be reassured that your life on the road is just around the RVing bend.
